Mobile Air Monitoring in Hamilton

Poor air quality affects us all, many people in our communities have breathing difficulties and on smog advisory days we are all warned against physical activity. By monitoring our air quality, we can determine the source of pollutants, leading to a healthier community.

Clean Air Hamilton is looking for involvement from communities across the city in a new program that will monitor air quality by neighbourhood.

A mobile air quality monitoring station mounted on a van will be operated by Rotek Environmental and will canvass neighbourhoods taking street level readings. Street level measurement allows Clean Air Hamilton to test the air that you and I are breathing every day.

Five neighbourhoods across Hamilton are going to participate by choosing two locations within their area for testing. Neighbourhood associations will be working with Green Venture to determine the best places for air quality monitoring, and after the testing is done, a report will be shared with the community. This is a great opportunity for the community to take a part in directing scientific testing to where it means the most.

Have your say on which communities receive Hamilton’s new air quality monitoring program by contacting Jordan Fysh at Green Venture (energy@greenventure.ca, 905-540-8787x151).

Neighbourhoods that are selected for the program will receive a presentation outlining the importance of air monitoring and describing the effects of some of the air quality contaminates.

Clean Air Hamilton is proud to deliver this program and is excited to see the results that come from this community driven initiative.

This project is a partnership between Clean Air Hamilton and Green Venture, with funding from ArcelorMittal Dofasco. It kicks off today with a call for community input through this blog post, Neighbourhood Associations and Business Improvement Areas.

Get involved or help spread the word!
