United Way Mobile Giving - No cheques, Just Texts

United Way of Burlington & Greater Hamilton is unveiling a new way to share the love this campaign season with the launch of text donations. With an easy click of the send button, texting UNITEDWAY to 45678 provides a $10.00 donation to United Way of Burlington & Greater Hamilton. The charge is simply added to the donor's phone bill (terms at www.mobilegiving.ca).

Text donations have made a huge impact around the world, as well as at home in Canada, so why not introduce this idea to the tech-savvy members of Hamilton and Burlington communities?

This new generation of giving made headline news when text donations helped raise $5 million for Haiti relief efforts. According to American business magazine, Business Week, in less than 24-hours citizens from around the United States helped the American Red Cross raise funds at an unbelievable rate of $200,000 per hour.

In today’s age there is a need, more than ever, to be connected to everyone and everything, all the time.  So, text donating is the next logical step to any charity interested in taping into not only their growing social media community, but also the members of Generation Y. Seen as the perfect tool for the Facebook generation, text donations can be filed quickly and easily - an aspect of donating that resonates well with teens and young adults.

The United Way of Burlington & Greater Hamilton kicked off our inaugural Mobile Giving Campaign with the help of ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s President and CEO Juergen Schachler and the 5,000 ArcelorMittal Dofasco employees in Hamilton, who made a $600,000 donation announcement via SMS on Tuesday afternoon during a special media presentation at our campaign headquarters.

The United Way of Burlington & Greater Hamilton seeks to enhance community life and build stronger, healthier and more vibrant communities by connecting community needs to community resources. Currently, funds raised through the United Way campaign directly support 137 programs and services delivered by 75 funded agencies in Burlington and Greater Hamilton.
